Identifying wild bees is a challenging task. Flying insects are nimble, they hardly hold still and look quite similar. With our identification charts we support you to recognise the Sculptured Resin Bee.
Are you unsure whether it is actually the Sculptured Resin Bee or a native bee? Follow our identification tree to the Sculptured Resin Bee.
The Asian mortar bee is a really big bee. In a size comparison, it towers over most native wild bees. Only bumblebees or wood bees have a comparable body size. In the English-speaking world, the bee has two names: it is called the "Giant Resin Bee" because of its body size, and its second name is "Sculptured Resin Bee" because of its dark shape. In technical language, we call it something similar, namely "Megachile sculpturalis".
